A Gentle Cleaning Routine for Sunglasses

A shirt hem seems like the quickest way to clear a smudge, especially when you are already outside. But dust caught in the fabric can drag across a lens, and a dry wipe can turn a small mark into a frustrating cleaning job. A brief rinse before wiping is a better everyday habit.

Rinse before you wipe

Wash your hands, then rinse the lenses with lukewarm water to lift away loose grit. If more cleaning is needed, use a small amount of mild dish soap, rinse thoroughly, and follow any care instructions supplied with the glasses. Avoid hot water and harsh household cleaners, which may not suit the lens coatings or frame finish.

Use a clean soft cloth

Dry the lenses with a clean microfiber cloth, using light pressure rather than scrubbing. Paper towels, tissues, and clothing can feel soft while still carrying fibers or grit that mark a surface. Keep the cloth in a clean case or wash it regularly, so yesterday’s dust is not today’s cleaning tool.

Store them away from heat

When you take sunglasses off, put them in a protective case instead of leaving them lens-down on a table or loose in a bag with keys. Avoid leaving them on a hot car dashboard; heat can affect some frames and lens coatings. If a screw loosens or the fit changes, ask an optician about adjustment rather than forcing the hinge yourself.
